The recently launched unity tariff by the pan African mobile operator, Celtel Nigeria, aptly christened “Simply Series” have continue to generate excitement amongst the generality of Nigerians. The excitement emanates from the fact that the unity tariff for the first time ever in the history of telecommunications in Nigeria, Celtel is offering one price to all networks. The Simply Series comes in three different plans; Simply Special, Simply Smooth and Simply Smart which eliminate complexity by offering consumers affordability, simplicity and greater transparency when choosing plans. The Simply Special targets the youth and average consumers looking for a simple tariff with affordable prices and maximum benefits. Call from subscribers on simply special plan during peak period attracts tariff of 66 kobo per second and 39 kobo per second off peak no matter the network that the call is terminating. Every subscriber is also entitled to 15 free SMS every month, while the price of SMS has dropped from N15 to N9. Simply Smooth is targeted at professionals, business people and high volume users desiring affordable prices while complexity and price discrimination between networks. This plan attracts N400 monthly access fee, while call attracts 59 kobo and 33 kobo on peak and off peak respectively. It also attracts 15 free SMS monthly and subsequent SMS is charged N9 each. The Simply Smart is designed for small and medium scale enterprises, very high volume users and business people looking for increase in convenience while controlling phone costs. The plan attracts N3,600 monthly fee with calls at peak period charged at 61 kobo per second and 33 kobo off peak. Users of this plan are entitled to 100 free minutes every month and 30 free SMS monthly also, with subsequent SMS charged at N9 each. Celtel also announced new international call rates, which cuts prices by 45% and reduces calling costs to as low as 55K per second for popular destinations like UK, US, UAE, amongst others. Cross sections of Nigerians have been reacting to this new tariff plan introduced by Celtel. Bola Adebayo, a banker, commended Celtel for this new innovation; she said “I was not totally surprised that this is coming from Celtel. The network has a rich history of firsts in introducing innovations and products that is targeted at making life better for Nigerians even from its days as ECONET.” Also commenting, Ben George, a 300 level student of Lagos State University, said he believed that Celtel must be thinking of student when they were developing this plans, because it will save us a lot of stress of carrying more than one phone in a bid to enjoy tariff slash which is always for calls within the same network, “Celtel has broken that barrier as I Can now enjoy same tariff no matter the network I am calling and the free 15 SMS and N9 per SMS is something to cherish.
